Artists’ and Writers’ Retreat in Eastern Canada
3888 Route 620, Tay Creek, New Brunswick, E6B 1K2
TAY RIDGE FARM is a 650-acre sanctuary in the heart of New Brunswick offering a new experience in learning, relaxation and appreciation of nature and the environment. We are just over the border from Stephen King country in Maine, USA. Other writers associated with the area include Farley Mowat and E.T. author William Kotzwinkle.
The farm lies in Canada’s Laurentian Forest with its unique flora and fauna. The picturesque River Tay runs through the length of the estate, and here you can find secluded swimming holes for bathing or sunning. The farm’s forest and meadows are rich in wildlife and rare plant species. A glacial esker, a relic of the Ice Age, forms a ridge at the eastern edge of the farm.
The retreat provides an opportunity for professional and aspiring artists and writers to work on a personal project or simply to unwind. There are daily meetings and writing discussion groups, and optional individual and group tutorials. Artists have a choice of studios to work in, as well as the great outdoors. We offer a relaxing and yet stimulating environment to get that creative energy flowing.
Ongoing tutorials are included in our summer program. We also hold occasional summer residential and non-residential tuition courses that include visual arts projects;
dyeing, weaving and textile arts; photography; feature and fiction writing; environmental studies; and sustainable forestry practices. Members and guests can usually join any of these courses on payment of the course fee. We are planning children’s summer camps for 2010
TAY CREEK is a 25-minute drive along the Royal Road (Route 620) from the 18th-century British garrison town of Fredericton, birthplace of the newspaper magnate Lord Beaverbrook, with its stylish waterfront mansions, red-brick municipal buildings, museums, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, restaurants and night life. There are many opportunities for natural, historic and sightseeing excursions. The replica historic settlement of King's Landing is an hour's drive away along the spectacular Saint John River, and arrangements can be made for whale-watching, trail riding and canoeing.
PEACE ~ARTS ~EXCELLENCE. At Tay Ridge Farm our emphasis is on the caring world and we work closely with international communities to promote peace and understanding through cultural exchange between peoples and nations. Pax (Peace Arts Excellence) is a not-for profit organization promoting independent and collaborative artistic efforts in the realms of visual arts, fine crafts, music, and literature.

THE TAY CREEK FOLK FESTIVAL started in 2008 as an event to showcase the amazing musical talent of our friends and neighbors and to introduce newcomers to the local music scene. We were fortunate enough in the first year to feature musicians from further afield, such as Straight Ahead, Eric LeBlanc and George Steeves, Helen MacKinnon and Ron Bagnell, and Owen Steele.
Our idea is to offer folk music in the old-fashioned ambience of a country barn on a stage partly made up of pieces of an old farm wagon. This is a country gathering for people of all ages: crafts are on sale, and there are amusements such as face-painting for children. There are also short music workshops and fringe jam sessions. We are pleased to highlight the talents of young people.
Festival goers may camp free in tents or RVs (no hook ups). Food and beverages are available throughout the weekend from 7am until late.
The festival is entirely organized and staffed by volunteers without grants or funding. It is very much a community festival, and would not exist without the goodwill and dedicated hard work of festival friends, both musicians and people behind the scenes.
THE RETREAT is owned by travel writer and novelist Jenny Jobbins, Jenny also teaches writing skills and journalism.
